Field Work
Sextant Technology leads a research programme on the foraging ecology and population dynamics of the Westland Petrel, a threatened species of endemic seabird, found only in Westland, New Zealand. This programme will be assessing the population trend of birds at a set of monitoring sites, and estimating vital rates such as survival and recruitment rates. In 2011, a satellite tracking programme is being carried out in collaboration with Deakin University, Australia, to examine the overlap of Westland petrel foraging areas with fisheries.
In our programme, we engage with a number of local groups and government agencies, responsible for environmental and wildlife management.
